The President and the Apprentice:
Eisenhower and Nixon, 1952 - 1961
For Beyond 50's "History" talks, listen to an interview with Irwin F. Gellman.  He offers 20 years of research that sheds new light on the dynamic between two, great American political figures.  More than half a century after Eisenhower left office, the history of his presidency is so clouded by myth, partisanship, and outright fraud that most people have little understanding of how Ike’s administration worked or what it accomplished. Gellman will prove that Eisenhower, not Truman, desegregated the military; Eisenhower and Nixon - not Lyndon Johnson - pushed the Civil Rights Act of 1957 through the Senate; Ike trusted and relied on Nixon, sending him on many sensitive overseas mission; Eisonhower never made plans for the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba; and much more.

 Soccernomics: Soccer & Money

For Beyond 50's "Finance" talks, listen to an interview with Simon Kuper.  He'll talk about the "hot topic" of modern soccer being in chaos.  Barely a summer goes by now without a cherished club flirting with bankruptcy or a wealthy businessman funding a mid-table team's ascension to Champions League competitor.  You'll learn about the aboliton of the maximum wage in the 1960s, through to the impact of TV money, both at home and abroad in the 1990s and 2000s, Kuper will explain how money, or lack of, affects fans' favorite clubs.  Intense competition is good for the fans, so long as football clubs survive - which they always do.  The rich men who sink their fortunes into subsidizing our entertainment should be encouraged to go on doing so - their loss is our gain.

How America Can Dominate in Soccer:

According to Kuper, if the U.S. would like to be winners, they would have to send their best players to Europe; hire European coaches; adopt a diverse, international playing style that incorporates different elements and not one particular style, but a collective one; and take the "Money Ball" numbers approach of statistical analysis, which is rarely practiced by soccer clubs around the world.

A Paris Apartment
For Beyond 50's "Literary" talks, listen to an interview with Michelle Gable.  She'll discuss about her fictional story that's a straight-out-of-Hollywood plot line: someone - perhaps Indiana Jones - accidentally stumbles into a time capsule untouched by modernity and filled with treasures left by its past owners.  In 2010, a 91-year-old woman died in the south of France, leaving behind an apartment in Paris.  Her family tasked auctioneer Olivier Choppin-Janvry and his team with visiting the flat in the city's 9th arrondissement, near the Pigalle red-light district and the Opera Garnier, and inventorying its contents.  When the unsuspecting experts unlocked the front door, they found it virtually untouched since before World War II.  The biggest surprise was a never-before-seen painting by famed 19th-century Italian artist Giovanni Boldini.  The subject of the photo, a woman perched on a lounge and shrouded in a pink satin evening gown, was 24-year-old Marthe de Florian, the apartment owner's grandmother who was a Belle Epoque socialite, theater actress, and Boldini's muse.

 Fitness After 50

Summer is a great time to get active, especially outdoors.  For those who are in midlife and just getting into exercise, we recommend that you listen to an interview with Laura Kneedler (in photo below).  The founder of Midlife Mojo, she specializes in helping men and women over 50 to have a trim, functional and youthful body.

You'll learn about the benefits of exercising past 50; how our exercise should change as we get older; how to work with a personal trainer; the best diet for weight loss and more.

According to Kneedler, a good personal trainer is one who is properly certified.  Not all are required to have certification and ongoing training.  If they work with those in midlife, it's important that the trainer can assess your physical characteristics, like offering a functional movement test for muscular imbalances.  One side of the body may be stronger than another, leading to injuries from working out incorrectly because of this imbalance.  Another assessment is for mobility problems, especially from sitting a lot at work and driving a car.  Determining physical stability problems is another consideration, along with gathering their health history, personal goals, expections, and dietary needs.

   The Jefferson Rule

In celebration of Independence Day, listen to an interview with David Sehat, a historian.  He'll explain about The Jefferson Rule - the unspoken conviction that any proposal or policy must be associated with and justified by the Founding Fathers—is a fact of American politics.  Liberals, conservatives, radicals, and libertarians alike look to the founding moment to justify their policies.  Our debate over the Founding Fathers is flawed in one crucial way: The Founders were not united and did not speak with one voice.

When contemporary politicians use phrases such as “what the Founders intended,” they are calling on a querulous and divided group that did not and cannot offer the singular guidance that we might desire.  Beginning with the early national debate between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, continuing through the Civil War, the fight over the New Deal, and the Reagan Revolution, up to the disputes between Barack Obama and the Tea Party, Sehat will show that political consideration of complex issues has been reduced to asking: What would the Founders do?  That oversimplification obscures the real issues and has damaged American politics.

The Real Founding Fathers
The five Native American tribes that formed the Iroquois Confederacy of the Eastern United States were self-governed by democratic laws rooted in natural and spiritual principles of social equality, pastorial peace, effective diplomacy, along with unity and strength as a confederation of peoples.  Their system of laws influenced the colonists in the drafting of the Revolutionary America's Albany Plan, the Articles of Confederation, and U.S. Constitution.
