Proposing Compulsory Voting in America:
Refusing to appear for jury duty, ignoring registration for the draft, failing to pay taxes, defying licensing requirements, and skipping school are all subject to fines and even imprisonment. Failure to vote in an election for a Federal office should also trigger a penalty.

Many countries such as Austria, Australia, Brazil, Peru, and Singapore require attendance at the polls while encouraging the casting of blank ballots for those who don’t care or for those with religious objections.

Studies show that compulsory voting tends to increase citizen awareness of issues and control of government. It would be an important way to effectively counteract the corrupting role of big contributors, big corporations, and big bureaucracies in governance.
