The film is based on the real-life story of two half-brothers, Mickey Ward, a blue collar worker with a dream of making it big as a boxer and his drug-addicted brother, Dicky Eckland, locally famous as a former boxer for knocking down Sugar Ray Leonard. Family life is oppressive for Ward, who also has to deal with his emotionally abusive mother and harpy sisters. The story revolves around young, 6-year-old Yusuf and his father that he adores - a wild honey collector living in an isolated region of Turkey's Black Sea Region. A beautiful and tender drama, Boonmee is suffering from acute kidney failure. During the last days of life life, he receives visions of his past lives, along with visits by the ghosts of his wife and son. Questioning what happens to us when we die, he decides to take a trek into the jungle with his family to find the cave in which his first life was born. Submitted by Finland, the film reveals how Finnish men are notorious for keeping their feelings bottled up. But in a steam-filled sauna, Finnish men's deepest feelings about life, love and famly are easily liberated. (Not nominated by the Academy)
