Celebrating the Woodstock Festival's
40th Year Anniversary

Woodstock Festival

Beyond 50 recently invited Michael Lang, the promoter of the Woodstock Festival for an interview this Fall. We will notify you of when he'll be on the program.

You'll learn about Lang's maneuvering and deal-making that resulted in a concert attended by 500,000 people on August 15, 1969. He was only in his 20's at the time. He deemed himself part of a new generation rejecting the old social order and embracing fresh ideas about such issues as civil rights, sexuality and drugs. He envisioned Woodstock to be more than a series of concerts: it would be a forum for alternative political and social philosophies, and a chance to debunk myths about long-haired kids, their music and their heroes.

As a side note, an even bigger concert was held a year later in 1970 in the UK called the Isle of Wight Festival. It was by far the largest human gathering in the world, surpassing Woodstock. Included in the lineup of over fifty performances included The Who, Jimi Handrix, The Doors, Joni Mitchell, Richie Havens, Jethro Tull, Chicago, The Moody Blues, and more.
