Wildcrafting Ethic
by Scott Kloos, Cascadia Folk Medicine

  • Make positive identification before harvesting.
  • Know the rare and endangered plants of the area and don't pick them.
  • Make Assessments:
Ecological Implications - Will your impact be noticeable? Will it adversely effect the often delicate ecological balance of the stand or the intricate web of interrelations that ensure its continued existence?
Animal/Insect Interactions - Are there animals or insects that depend on this plant for food or other uses? How will your harvesting impact these relationships?
Personal - Are you in the proper emotional state to make a harvest? Are you prepared to be honest with yourself in regards to making decisions about your impact on this stand? How much of this medicine can or will you realistically process and use?
  • Ask permission from and make offerings to the plant. Remember that when you treat plants with respect, they will not only be more effective as medicine, but they will be more likely to reveal themselves to you.
  • Pick from different stands or spots in a stand to minimize impact.
  • Care for and develop a relationship with the stand. Leave any area you harvest from in the same or better condition than you found it. observe the stand over time so that you can continue to refine your personal assessment of any harvesting impact you have had or any natural environmental changes that you may have an effect on the health of the stand. Based on this information, be prepared to alter your wildcrafting practices or stop harvesting altogether from this spot.

Coach Carl Casanova: Ten Everyday Tips for Steady Success

Coach Carl Casanova: Ten Everyday Tips for Steady Success

The following is an excerpt from Carl Casanova's book, "What Every Successful Person Knows!"

He recommends to follow the Ten Everyday Tips for Steady Success:
  1. Every day, breathe, breathe, breathe. Start your day with deep breathing exercise. It will circulate the blood flow, help you be clear in your thinking, and aid your body to combat anxiety and stress.
  2. Every day, identify what is causing tension and be assertive to find a solution. Life is short, so be aware and identify what is the cause of your pain. Be pro-active.
  3. Every day, allow time for yourself. Take time to create in your schedule a routine of being alone, to be still, to reflect, to meditate, to pray, to be with moments that nurture you.
  4. Every day, engage in wisdom reading (preferably in the morning). Read motivational, devotional, or inspirational material daily to program your brain in the direction that guides the best in you.
  5. Every day, give and receive love. Also, get the appropriate amounts of rest and nutrition. Love is exciting. Find simple ways to share love and to receive it. A well-balanced day starts with proper rest and a good breakfast.
  6. Every day, rid yourself of dysfunction, including relationships that hurt. Set clear limits with people who control, who manipulate, and who are hurtful. Our language is an indicator of what's in the heart.
  7. Every day, bring passionate meaning to your vocation. Let your work be a place where you enjoy going to because you love what you do.
  8. Every day, share kindness as well as laughter. Find joy in being kind toward everyone you meet. Share something fun; it's worth a good laugh.
  9. Every day, learn something new to improve yourself in your personal and professional world. Be a life-long learner to improve your life. You will feel good about what you have accomplished.
  10. Every day, commit to live the way you wish to be remembered. Have you decided what you want others to think of you when you are gone? Start today to leave a legacy of a good character and successful person.
